René Vogelzang Photographs

The restrictions on movement during the 2020 Covid19 lock-down period turned out to be an opportunity to explore the local neighbourhood and provided a backdrop to the mental adjustment required to cope with these conditions. This series of photographs titled “Pandemical morning walks – a suburban lexicon” expresses a deepening attachment to the local area through humorous compositions and word associations that reflect my evolving state of mind.

This project is centred on a personal exploration of our sense of place and belonging. It reveals a fascination with the spiritual and emotional impact that different landscapes have on each of us and of how we form our identity in new and unfamiliar places. These photographs that were taken in Sydney's Inner West over many years also explore the impact on our sense of belonging as our familiar environment changes around us and touchstone landmarks are transformed into new landscapes and cityscapes.

The photographs celebrate the beauty of the NSW National Parks in images informed by insights gained by learning from local history and indigenous culture.
